ABOUT THE ARTIST
I was entranced by the colors and forms of the farms and forests where I lived as a child. Also by the liveliness of the people and animals around me. There was lots of time to wander in the woods, hear the cicadas singing at twilight or watch the bugs in the grass. What became my adult creative process was rooted in those early experiences. Thus, my favorite context is still more rural than urban.
My landscapes begin with finding a view that is inherently dynamic, with a far horizon, an active sky, and land forms with an interesting composition of their own. Houses and machinery and animals are like decorations in a huge tapestry. My goal is to convey the amazing beauty and variety of the natural world and the complexity of human relationships to it.
For portraits I like working directly from life, sometimes in the sitter’s milieu, otherwise in my studio. Practical decisions are made early on: place and pose, what to wear, how to feel relaxed and comfortable, time of day, and lighting. As the overall design is being established, I am thinking how can I convey what I am seeing, which colors and which details will be important. From start to finish it’s a complex process, requiring a sort of collaboration. The sitter’s personality comes forward and in the end both of us should feel, “yes, that’s ok.”
The intensity of life and its fragility are what I care about, the vitality of the moment before it disappears.
This is why I make art: maybe it will outlast the vanishing moment.
